Police Lies and Coercion

I have mentioned before the the Police not only have the right but are encouraged to lie to you during interrogations (what they call "Interviews" to avoid frightening terminology, another lie) but these lies often become brutal acts of coercion and psychological torture, combined with the physical intimidation of armed officers looming over you in a dark room, it can be an excruciating experience.

Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, in New York Court of Appeals, ruled that "It is well established that not all deception of a suspect is coercive, but in extreme forms it may be," Lippman wrote and that the interrogation techniques and lies had "Completely undermined" the right to remain silent and not incriminate oneself.

Police have used these acts of terrorism for decades, forcing confessions of crimes that were not committed in order to "reduce a sentence of a case they WILL convict you on" and that if you sign some arbitrary confession, it will somehow help you in the end.

In addition to direct lies, the police will also stage "accidental" meetings and observations of multiple suspects, in  hopes that one will turn on the other or somehow become so infuriated that they incriminate the other party or themselves in these trumped up charges.

Now, don't get me wrong, I do believe that those who have GENUINELY broken the law deserve to be punished appropriately, but falsely stating "facts" in order to frighten an innocent person into confessing to a crime they did not commit, simply because the police have no other recourse or evidence or simply have grown impatient at the "Due Process" procedure, is immoral and illegal.

Understand this, if you do confess to a crime you did not commit, this "evidence" is nearly all the police and the local District Attorney need to send you to jail for a very long time. No matter what, make sure you follow these guidelines:

  1. NEVER SPEAK TO THE POLICE WITHOUT LEGAL COUNCIL.
  2. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SIGN ANYTHING WITHOUT COUNCIL.
  3. ASSERT THAT YOU "DO NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS" WHEN PROBED.
Also remember that "Pleading the 5th" is not an admission of guilt. Police, Press and ignorant people believe that by "Refusing to speak so you do not incriminate yourself" is an admission of guilt. It does not mean that you will incriminate yourself for the crime they are interrorgating you for, but for ANYTHING THAT YOU SAY CAN AND WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU regardless of what they may claim.

They WILL lie to you, so protect yourself against incriminating yourself by not answering questions without some legal council.

These underhanded tactics, lies and torturous techniques should be abolished but with the sheer volume of people in United States prisons that are serving huge sentences for things they may not have done, there is very little chance of these methods being taken away anytime soon.
